장례지도사 자격시험제 추진을 위한 한･미 비교연구

Abstract

우리나라 장례지도사는 과거에 상(喪)이 발생하면 마을 공동체 단위나 가족 단위로 장사를 지냈기 때문에 장례업이 존재하진 않았다. 현대에 들어서면서 고인을 장사(葬事)지내기 위해 유가족들은 장례지도사들에게 의지하게 되었고 점차 전문 장례지도사로부터 안정적인 장례서비스를 요구하게 되었다. 그러나 우리나라 장례지도사의 입지는 아직까지 전문성을 갖추었다고 인정받기 미흡한 실정이다. 본 연구는 우리나라 장례지도사 자격제도를 살펴보고 미국의 장례 관련 자격제도를 비교하여 우리나라 장례지도사 자격제도의 개선점을 모색하였다. 조사 결과 우리나라는 현재 시간 이수형 무시험 자격제도이며 교육에 대한 평가는 학원에서 자체적으로 이루어지고 있는 반면, 미국은 국가가 공인한 자격시험제도를 실시하며 주 장례위원회에서 면허증을 발급하고 장례지도사로 근무하길 원하는 사람은 반드시 장례지도사 면허를 취득해야 한다는 점이 조사되었다. 이에 우리나라 장례지도사가 장례서비스의 전문 직업인으로 인정받기 위해서 우선적으로 국가자격 시험제도의 도입이 필요함을 강조하고 장례지도사 자격시험제 추진을 위한 개선방안을 제시하였다.

In the old village, when a person died, a funeral was held in the local community or family unit without a funeral director. During the Japanese colonial period, an undertaker (Jang-Eui-Sa) appeared, and from the 1990s, an undertaker (Yum-Sa) who had obtained a private certificate was present. From 2012, under the national certification system, the job of funeral director emerged. Modern people are increasingly calling for specialization in funeral services, but it is not enough for funeral directors to be recognized as experts. This study examined the characteristics of Korean funeral directors and compared the U.S. funeral director qualification system with the Korean funeral director qualification system, with the aim of improving the Korean system. As a result of this research, we found that Korea currently has a timed non-examination qualification system, and the evaluation of education is conducted by the institute itself, whereas the U.S. has a nationally recognized qualification examination, and those who want to work as funeral directors must obtain a funeral director license. For our country’s funeral directors to be recognized as experts, we propose the introduction of a national qualification examination system.
