한국사회의 교육계층화 : 대학진학 단계에서의 질적 차별화를 중심으로

Abstract

본 연구는 한국사회에서의 상급학교 진학 결정요인을 구명한 김경근·변수용(2006) 연구의 후속 작업으로서, 한국교육고용패널(KEEP) 3차년도 데이터를 사용하여 일반계 고등학교 졸업생의 고등교육기관 진학 결과를 좀 더 구체적으로 살펴보았다. 분석결과에 따르면, 성별, 교육포부, 학업성취도와 같은 변인들이 대학진학 여부 및 진학하는 4년제 대학의 유형에 중요한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 구체적으로, 학생의 학업성취도와 교육포부 수준이 높을수록, 그리고 여학생보다는 남학생이, 전문대학 보다는 4년제 대학에 진학하거나 4년제 대학 중에서도 위세가 높은 대학으로 진학할 개연성이 더 큰 것으로 나타났다. 이 과정에서 부모의 교육수준과 같은 가정배경 변인은 자녀의 학업성취도에 영향력을 행사함으로써 대학진학 여부와 진학 대학의 유형에 간접적인 영향을 미치고 있었다. 이러한 분석결과는 고등교육이 보편화되고 있는 한국사회에서 교육계층화가 가시적으로 진행되고 있음을 보여준다.

This study examines determinants of adolescents' transition to postsecondary education in South Korea. Using the third wave data for general high school graduates from the Korean Education and Employment Panel (KEEP), the authors found that adolescents' gender, educational aspiration, and academic achievement have a significant effect on their odds of attending a postsecondary institution and a selective college. More specifically, those students with higher academic achievement and educational aspiration are likely to attend a four-year and selective college rather than a junior and less selective four-year college, while male students are more likely than female students to attend a four-year and selective college. In this process, family background in particular such as parents' education appears to play an important role in increasing the children's odds of attending a selective college via its effect on children's academic achievement.
