대학생 학자금대출 수요 집단의 특성 분석

Abstract

지난 수년 동안 대학교육비용의 지속적인 상승과 더불어 학자금대출(student loans)에 대한 관심이 커지고 있다. 본 연구는 어떤 학생들이 학자금대출을 필요로 하는지를 실증적으로 밝혀보기 위해 한국교육고용 패널(KEEP)의 3차, 4차년도 자료를 이용하여 분석하였다. 분석방법은 학자금 대출여부와 학자금 대출액수를 종속변수로 하여 임의효과 패널로짓 및 패널토빗 회귀모형을 활용하였다. 분석결과, 저소득계층 학생들의 학자금대출에 대한 수요가 다른 소득계층에 비해서 더 크게 나타났다. 또한, 장학금과 같은 학비보조금은 대학교육의 절대비용을 낮춤으로서 학자금 대출 확률과 대출금액을 감소시켰다. 전공계열과 관련해서는 이공계학생들이 인문사회계열 학생들에 비해서 학자금대출에 대한 수요가 크게 나타났다. 대학특성과 관련된 요인들로서, 국·공립 대학의 학생들은 사립대학 학생들보다 학자금 대출확률 및 대출금액이 낮았고 비서울소재 대학 학생들은 서울소재 대학 학생들에 비해 학자금 대출확률과 대출금액이 높았다. 이상의 분석결과를 기초로 대학과 정부 및 후속 연구에 대한 시사점을 논의하였다.

As the costs for higher education have steadily increased over the last years, students loans received a renewed interest among college students, scholars and policy makers. This study aims to identify the characteristics of college loan recipients by using a national sample from the Korea Education and Employment Panel data (KEEP). The nature of our dependent variables, which are either binary or truncated one, and the structure of data require us to employ such statistical tools as random effect logit and tobit regression models. This study found that students of relatively low-income families were more likely to receive a loan than their counterparts. Financials aids tended to reduce the likelihood of borrowing money. Engineering students were more likely to borrow money than students majoring in humanities and social sciences. Private college students were more likely to receive a loan. Students from the colleges located outside Seoul were more likely to become a loan recipient. The results suggest that students of economically disadvantaged families benefit from the students loans of various sources. This paper discussed some practical implications for higher education institutions and government as well as future research.
