The Effectiveness of School Type on College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) : A Case of Foreign Language High School(FLHS) of South Korea

Abstract

본 연구의 경우 한국교육고용패널(KEEP)를 활용하여 대학수학능력시험점수에 대한 외국어고등학교의 효과를 살펴보고자 하였다. 본 연구의 경우 대학수학능력시험점수에 대한 외고의 효과를 내실있게 분석하기 위해 학교수준과 학생수준으로 나누어 분석하였으며, HGLM 모형을 통해 독자공부시간, 과목 흥미, 교육기대가 학생들의 언어 및 외국어 성취에 영향을 주고 있음을 확인하였다. 또한 수능성적에 대한 외고의 효과는 학생들의 선행 학업성취 수준에 의해 영향을 받고 있었으며, 외고의 학교유형은 학생들 사이의 차이를 만들어내지 못하였다. 이러한 결과는 수능성적에 대한 외고의 효과가 학교의 설립유형 혹은 학교의 특성에 의해 결정되는 것이 아니라 외고가 우수한 학생들을 선발하기 때문이라는 것을 보여주고 있는 것이다.

Using nationally representative data from the Korean Education & Employment Panel(KEEP), this study examines the school effect of foreign language high schools on CSAT. We have divided the effectiveness of FLHS into school side and student side for estimating the precise impact of FLHS on CSAT. The results of HGLM show that self-study, subject of interest, and education expectation are associated with an increase of points in the Reading and English achievement score. The finding also suggests that the effectiveness of FLHS on CSAT was affected by students’ pre-academic achievement level, and the school type of FLHS can’t make a difference within students. This means that effectiveness of FLHS on CSAT was decided not by school type or school’s characteristics, but decided by the selection of excellent students in academic filed.
