가정배경, 가정 내 의사소통 및 학업성취의 구조적 관계 분석

Abstract

본 연구는 일반고 학생을 대상으로 가정 내 의사소통양식의 계층차와 그 영향력을 학업성취와의 관계 속에서 조망할 수 있는 연구모형을 제시하고자 하였다. 구체적으로 본고는 부모 자녀 간 개방적 의사소통을 중심으로 가정배경뿐만 아니라 종래 학업성취 결정요인으로 주목받아왔던 부모 교육기대, 학생-교사관계, 자아효능감을 포괄하는 모형을 구축하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 한국교육고용패널 1-4차년도 자료를 활용하여 주요 연구문제를 수립하고 구조방정식 모형을 통해 검증하였다. 연구결과, 가정의 사회경제적 지위가 높을수록 부모-자녀 간에는 개방적 의사소통이 이루어지는 것으로 나타났다. 나아가 가정 내 개방적 의사소통은 학업성취에 직접적인 영향력을 행사하고 있었으며, 자아효능감 및 학생-교사관계와도 정적인 상관을 갖는것으로 파악되었다. 요컨대, 가정 내 개방적 의사소통을 통해 부모와 자유롭게 대화함으로써 권리의식(sense of entitlement)과 사회적 기술(social skill)을 효율적으로 체득할 수 있는 아이들이, 실제로 학업성취 및 자아효능감도 높고 교사와의 관계가 원만한 것으로 드러났다. 이외에도 매개효과 검정결과, 95% 신뢰수준에서 세 가지 경로의 통계적 유의성을 식별할 수 있었으나 민감도 분석에 의하면 가정의 SES→가정 내 의사소통→학업성취 경로만 비교적 안정적(robust)인 것으로 파악되었다. 아울러 다집단 분석을 통해 본고에서 제시된 모형이 성별에 구애받지 않고 일반적으로 적용 가능한 모형임을 확인하였다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로 계층 간 의사소통격차 완화를 위한 적실성 있는 정책적 대안을 제언하였다.

Drawing on nationally representative data from the Korean Education & Employment Panel (KEEP), this study investigates the parents-children communication differential by family background, and the effects of parents-children communication style on academic achievement in relationship with the parents’ educational expectation, teacher-student relationship, and self-efficacy. The SEM(Structural Equation Modeling) results showed that the higher the parents’ SES level, the higher the level of open family communication style. In addition, the open family communication style had a direct effect on academic achievement. Furthermore, the bootstrapping test showed that the open family communication style and teacher-student relationship were significant mediators of the effect of parents‘ SES on academic achievement. This finding suggests that parents-children communication style exists in a different form for parents‘ SES, and this can lead to an achievement gap between classes. From this finding, several policy measures proposed to mitigate the gap between youths’ achievement.
