원어민 보조교사가 고등학생들의 영어능력 향상에 미치는 영향

Abstract

본 연구는 일반계 고등학교의 국가수준 학업성취도평가 결과를 이용하여 원어민 보조교사가 학생들의 영어능력 향상에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 실증분석 결과, 원어민 강사는 일반계 고등학교 학생들의 영어과목 학업성취도에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 분석되었다. 그러나 이러한 긍정적인 영향은 주로 중상위권 학생들에게서 유의하게 나타났다. 즉, 상대적으로 영어에 자신 있고 준비가 된 학생들일수록 원어민 강사가 영어과목 학습에 더 큰 도움을 받는다는 것이다. 따라서 원어민 강사제도가 보다 많은 계층의 학생들에게 효과를 가져올 수 있도록 하기 위해서는 원어민 강사제도가 확대될 필요가 있고, 수준별 학습 등을 통해 영어능력이 떨어지는 학생들에 대한 지원도 고려해야 할 것으로 보인다.

This study used Nationwide Scholastic Achievement Test scores to examine whether native English teaching assistants help high school students in Korea improve their English skill. The empirical results suggest positive impact of native English teachers on students' English performance. The positive effect is observed mainly for higher-ability students, who are confident in and well-prepared for English. This result indicates that an extension of the current native English teacher program might lead to a better outcome for students' English ability and that a customized way of teaching by native English teachers is expected to better serve different levels of students in different approaches.
