부모의 소득 수준이 자녀의 고등교육에 미치는 영향

Abstract

본 연구는 부모의 소득 수준이 자녀의 고등교육에 미치는 영향력을 알아보기 위해 한국교육고용패널Ⅱ 자료를 활용하여 실증분석을 시행하였다. 분석 결과 부모의 소득 분위가 상승할수록 자녀가 높은 수준의 고등교육을 받을 확률이 상승하였다. 흥미로운 점은 실질적 소득 수준을 떠나 부모의 경제적 지원에 대한 자녀의 기대에 따라서도 진학 선택이 달라질 수 있다는 것이었다. 성별로 나누어 분석한 결과, 남성인 자녀가 부모의 소득 수준에 의한 영향력을 더 크게 받는 것으로 나타났으며, 여성의 경우 고등교육 진학에 있어 부모에 대한 경제적 지원 기대 효과가 남성보다 더 높은 것으로 나타났다. 이를 통해, 부모의 경제력에 따라 성인 자녀의 고등교육 기회가 여전히 동등하지 않다는 것을 확인하였으며, 그 영향력이 자녀의 성별에 따라서 달라질 수 있음을 관찰하였다.

This article tried to see whether children’s tertiary education level is affected by parent’s income, using Korean Education & Employment PanelⅡ(KEEPⅡ). The results show parental income is an important factor in their children’s education level, meaning the higher the parent’s income, the higher the probability that their children will receive the better education. Interestingly, regardless of the actual income level, the expected period of parental financial support had a very significant effect on children's tertiary education level. Subgroup estimation results by sex show this parental income effect is greater for males than females. In the case of female, they are more affected by the expected period of financial support from their parents than the male. This study point out that the opportunity to get tertiary education is still differ by their parent's income level and this impact may vary depending on the child’s gender.
