대학생의 재학기간 연장 및 중도탈락 결정요인 분석 : 학자금 지원의 영향을 중심으로

Abstract

이 연구는 한국교육고용패널 2004-2010년 자료를 사용하여 2005년에 4년제 대학에 입학한 여자 대학생의 2010년 현재 졸업 대비 재학과 중도탈락 결정요인을 학자금 지원의 영향을 중심으로 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 재학기간 연장에 영향을 미치는 요인은 학자금 대출, 교육포부, 평균학점, 공부시간, 그리고 수도권 소재 대학으로 나타났다. 학자금 대출에 의존하는 경우, 입학 후 5년이 경과한 시점에서 졸업하지 않고 대학에 재학할 확률이 가정배경, 학생특성, 대학생활요인, 대학특성 및 계열을 통제한 이후에도 대출에 의존하지 않는 경우에 비하여 대략 2배 높았다. 한편, 대학졸업 대비 중퇴 확률에 영향을 미치는 요인은 아버지 학력과 평균 학점으로서, 아버지 학력과 평균 학점이 낮을수록 중퇴 확률은 높아졌다. 학자금 지원은 중퇴에 영향을 미치지 않았다. 이상의 결과는 학자금 대출에 의존할수록 대학생이 재학기간을 연장하고 있어, 이들의 경제적 부담을 덜어주기 위한 무상장학금 확대가 필요함을 시사한다. 또한 대학생의 학업성취도가 학업지속 및 적기 졸업의 핵심 결정요인임을 알 수 있다.

This study explored determinants of delayed graduation and dropout of female students who entered 4-year college in 2005 using 1st through 7th wave KEEP data, with a particular attention to student aid variables. The study found that determinants of extended enrollment included student loan, educational aspiration, average GPA, self-study hours, and colleges in large seoul metropolitan areas. Those who depended on loans for tuition and fees were about two times more likely to delay graduation even after controlling for SES, student characteristics, college experience variables, and college attributes and majors. The determinants of dropout of female college students were father’s education and average GPA. Student aid did not have an effect on students’ dropout decision. The results suggest that it is necessary to expand grants to lessen the financial burden of students who delayed graduation. Also, student academic achievement represented by average GPA is revealed as a main predictor of persistence and timely graduation.
