재수 경험이 대학 및 대학원 진학에 미치는 효과

Abstract

본 논문에서는 KEEP 고등학생 코호트의 9차년도 자료에 대한 분석을 통해 재수 경험이 4년제 일반대학 진학 확률을 더 높였는지, 그리고 대학원 진학 확률에는 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지를 분석하였다. 재수를 경험했는지 여부뿐만 아니라 재수를 통해 어느 정도 성적 향상이 있었는지를 주요한 변수로 분석하였으며, 고등학교 졸업 당시 수능성적을 통제한 상태에서 이들 변수가 유의한 효과를 보였는지 검토하였다. 분석 결과 고등학교 졸업 당시 수능 성적을 통제할 경우 재수 경험은 일반대학 진학 확률을 유의하게 더 높이지 못한 것으로 나타났다. 여자의 경우에는 오히려 유의한 마이너스 값을 나타냈다. 재수 경험은 대학원 진학에도 유의한 영향을 미치지 못하였다. 반면 재수 시 성적 향상이 클수록 일반대학 진학 가능성은 높아졌는데, 그 정도는 고등학교 졸업 당시 수능성적이 미치는 효과와 유사하였다. 재수 시 성적 향상은 대학원 진학에도 유의한 영향을 미쳤는데, 고등학교 졸업 당시 수능성적이 미치는 효과보다 훨씬 강한 영향력을 나타냈다. 이는 과거 재수 시의 성공 혹은 실패 경험이, 대학원 진학을 통해 인적자본 투자 기간을 연장할지 여부를 선택하는 단계에서 심리적으로 영향을 미쳤음을 시사해준다.

This paper aims to analyze the effect of the experience of repeating a college entrance examination by using the Korea Education and Employment Panel (KEEP) data. The main question is whether repeaters are more likely to enter 4-year university and to enter graduate school, even though controlling the KSAT (Korean Scholastic Aptitude Test) score at high school graduation. The results show that the experience of repeating a college entrance examination does not affect significantly not only the probability of entering university but also that of entering graduate school, if KSAT score of the last year is controlled. However, as the KSAT score improves more greatly between two years, the probability of entering university and that of entering graduate school increase more rapidly. Especially, the effect of KSAT score improvement on the probability of entering graduate school is strikingly positive, implying that the past successful experience during the period of repeating a college entrance examination may induce to invest more educational investment such as graduate school.
