사교육의 장기효과는 존재하는가?: 한국교육고용패널조사를 이용한 분석

Abstract

본 연구는 한국직업능력개발원의 「한국교육고용패널조사」를 활용하여 고등학교 시절의 사교육 및 혼자 공부한 시간의 장기효과, 즉 고교 시절의 사교육 및 혼자 공부한 시간이 최종학교 졸업 후 노동시장 성과에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 실증분석 하였다. 자료가 가지는 내생성 및 선택편의를 통제하기 위해 도구변수법 및 성향점수매칭 방법을 이용하였고, 표본이 가지는 개인의 이질성을 통제하고자 KEEP 1차 연도의 인문계 고등학교 3학년 코호트로 한정하였다. 본 연구에서 나타난 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 사교육의 단기적인 효과는 존재하나 장기적인 효과는 나타나지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 혼자 공부한 시간의 경우 단기적인 효과뿐 아니라 장기적으로도 일부 긍정적인 효과를 보이고 있다. 이는 대학 입시를 위한 사교육은 일회성 인적자본투자로 해석될 수 있으며, 혼자 공부한 시간의 경우는 장기적인 인적자본 형성 및 축적에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 해석할 수 있다. 본 연구의 분석결과는 사교육의 경우 겉으로 드러나는 교육에 대한 투자 변수가 될 수 있고, 혼자 공부한 시간의 경우 겉으로는 잘 드러나지 않는 교육에 대한 투자 변수로 인식할 가능성이 존재하는 현실에서, 장기적인 관점의 인적자본투자가 중요함을 시사하는 결과이다.

This study empirically investigates the long-term effects of private tutoring and hours of studying alone in one's high-school years on the labor market outcomes using the Korean Education & Employment Panel To this end, we used instrumental variables and propensity score matching to control the endogeneity and selection bias. The main findings of this study are as follows: First, the long-term effects of private tutoring do not appear although short-term effects appeared. Second, in the case of hours of studying alone, the long-term as well as short-term effects have shown to be positive. The private tutoring for college entrance exams can be interpreted as a one-time investment in human capital. Also, studying alone has some positive effect on the formation and accumulation of long-term human capital. Therefore, this study suggests that investments in human capital are important in the long term.
