The Concept of Vocational Education & Training (VET) and Trends Towards 2030

Vocational education and training (VET) has been defined in various ways over time, influenced by the stakeholders involved, major changes of the given times, and international discourse, resulting in a multitude of related terms (Lee Moo-Geun & Lee Chan, 2020). Changes in science and technology, demographics, labor markets, and socio-cultural dynamics have continued to transform the definitions and principles around VET, with the pace of such evolution expected to accelerate even further. It is necessary and timely to systematically review and organize the legal and academic definitions of various VET concepts presented to date, which shall become the basis for conceptualizing VET for 2030. Therefore, this article explores the multiple concepts and definitions of VET to gain an understanding of their current states and insights on anticipated VET trends by 2030. This shall allow us to reassess the roles and functions of VET amid diverse drivers of change.
